1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully advocated for a pupil with complex SEND needs to secure additional support.

Situation: A Year 3 pupil with a dual diagnosis of Autism and SEMH needs was receiving minimal in-class support, and her progress had stalled for two consecutive terms. Task: As SENDCo, I needed to build a robust evidence base and navigate the EHCP application process to secure a higher level of provision. Action: I gathered termly assessment data, commissioned an Educational Psychologist report, and coordinated a multi-agency meeting with the SALT and the family within six weeks. I submitted a detailed EHCP application with annotated intervention records. Result: The EHCP was granted within 18 weeks, securing 15 hours of one-to-one support per week. By the following year, the pupil's reading age had advanced by 14 months.
2Question

Give an example of CPD or training you delivered to staff that led to a measurable improvement in inclusive practice.

Situation: A mid-year review of classroom observations revealed that 60% of teaching staff were using whole-class instruction without differentiation for pupils on the SEND register. Task: I needed to upskill 24 teachers and teaching assistants on adaptive teaching strategies before the spring term assessments. Action: I designed a three-session CPD programme covering visual supports, scaffolded tasks and SEMH-aware classroom management, drawing on the SEND Code of Practice and current EEF guidance. I followed up with fortnightly drop-in clinics. Result: The next cycle of observations showed 80% of classrooms implementing at least two adaptive strategies consistently, and SEND pupil attainment in reading rose by an average of 8 percentage points at end-of-year assessment.
