STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage challenging behaviour in the classroom

Situation: I had a Year 10 pupil who frequently disrupted Science lessons by shouting and refusing to engage with practical work. Task: I needed to address this behaviour while maintaining a positive learning environment for the other 14 students. Action: I implemented a personalised behaviour plan with clear expectations and rewards, provided one-to-one support during practicals, and liaised with the pastoral team weekly. I also adapted my teaching style to include more kinesthetic activities that matched his learning preferences. Result: Within 6 weeks, his disruptive incidents decreased by 80% and he achieved a Grade 4 in his mock GCSE, exceeding his target grade.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to support a pupil with additional needs

Situation: A new pupil with autism joined my Year 9 Maths class mid-term, with no prior information about his specific needs or triggers. Task: I needed to ensure he could access the curriculum while maintaining the learning pace for other students. Action: I observed his responses during the first week, created visual timetables and task cards, established a quiet workspace away from high-traffic areas, and introduced structured breaks every 20 minutes. I also coordinated with his support assistant to develop consistent strategies. Result: Within 3 weeks, he was completing 90% of classwork independently and his anxiety levels visibly decreased, allowing him to participate in group discussions for the first time.
