1Question

Tell me about a time you worked with a particularly challenging or disengaged student

I worked with a Year 9 student who had been excluded from school and refused to engage with any learning materials. The situation required immediate intervention as he was falling further behind in core subjects. I took action by first building rapport through his interest in football, then gradually incorporating Maths concepts through sports statistics and English through match reports. Over 12 weeks, I created a completely personalised curriculum that connected to his interests. The result was remarkable - he progressed from refusing to write a single sentence to completing full essays and achieving grade 4 equivalent in his Maths assessments, ultimately securing a place at a new school.
2Question

How would you handle a situation where a pupil refuses to engage with learning

I encountered this with a Year 10 student with anxiety who would shut down completely during Science lessons. The task was to find alternative approaches that wouldn't trigger her stress response while still covering essential KS4 content. I implemented a multi-sensory approach, using hands-on experiments she could do at her kitchen table, visual aids, and breaking lessons into 10-minute segments with regular breaks. I also gave her control over the pace and allowed her to choose which topics to tackle first. After 6 weeks, she was actively participating in full 45-minute sessions and achieved a grade 5 in her mock GCSE, compared to her previous grade 2 baseline.
