STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you provided exceptional customer service

Situation: A customer visited our store looking frustrated after visiting 3 other mattress retailers without finding the right bed for their back problems. Task: I needed to understand their specific needs and find a solution where others had failed. Action: I spent 25 minutes asking detailed questions about their sleep position, pain points, and previous mattress experiences. I then demonstrated 4 different mattress types, explaining how each would support their spine alignment. Result: They purchased a £1,200 mattress and returned 2 weeks later to thank me, saying their back pain had reduced by 80%. They also referred 2 friends who made purchases totalling £1,800.
2Question

Describe a situation where you worked towards achieving targets or goals

Situation: My retail team was 15% behind our quarterly sales target with just 3 weeks remaining. Task: I needed to increase my personal sales while supporting team morale. Action: I analysed our customer data and identified that weekend shoppers spent 40% more than weekday customers. I volunteered for extra weekend shifts and focused on upselling complementary products like pillows and protectors. I also shared my successful techniques with 3 teammates during our daily briefings. Result: I exceeded my personal target by 125% and our team finished the quarter 8% above target, earning everyone a £200 bonus.
