- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to quickly build rapport and develop lasting, trusted relationships.
- A solid understanding of the UK energy market, including the key drivers behind pricing movements and market fluctuations (or a strong desire to deepen this expertise).
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage workload effectively, balance competing priorities and consistently meet deadlines.
- Strong IT skills, with confidence using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, to analyse data and support commercial decision-making.
- A collaborative mindset, comfortable working cross-functionally with multiple teams to deliver an outstanding customer journey and positive commercial outcomes.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded sales targets in a competitive market

Situation: My previous company set aggressive quarterly targets during a downturn when competitors were cutting prices by 12%. Task: I needed to secure £850k in new business whilst maintaining profit margins. Action: I researched 30 prospects' specific pain points and tailored proposals showing ROI calculations rather than competing on price alone. I also leveraged existing client relationships for warm referrals. Result: I closed £1.1M in deals, exceeding target by 29% whilst maintaining average margins of 18%, the highest in our regional team.
2Question

Describe how you've collaborated with multiple teams to achieve a commercial objective

Situation: A major client threatened to cancel their £400k contract due to delivery issues affecting their operations. Task: I needed to retain this client whilst addressing their concerns across multiple departments. Action: I coordinated daily calls between our technical, operations and customer service teams, creating a shared action plan with clear deadlines. I personally visited the client weekly to provide updates and gather feedback. Result: We resolved all issues within 3 weeks, retained the full contract value, and the client increased their spend by £150k the following quarter due to improved confidence.
