STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you turned around a disengaged class and improved their attainment in a humanities subject.

Situation: A Year 9 Geography class of 27 students was consistently underperforming, with 60% scoring below expected levels in end-of-unit assessments. Task: I needed to re-engage the group and raise attainment before their mock assessments in six weeks. Action: I redesigned three units using enquiry-based learning, introduced weekly Kahoot retrieval quizzes, and set up peer-marking sessions to build accountability. I also met individually with the five lowest-attaining students to set personal targets. Result: By the mock assessment, 78% of the class met or exceeded expected levels, and the five targeted students all improved by at least one grade boundary. The approach was later adopted by two colleagues in the department.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a challenging classroom behaviour whilst maintaining a positive learning environment.

Situation: During a KS4 History lesson on the causes of World War One, two students became confrontational during a debate activity, disrupting the learning of 25 others. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation quickly without derailing the lesson or humiliating either student. Action: I calmly separated the students, redirected the class to an independent source-analysis task, and spoke privately with each student to understand the trigger. I applied the school's behaviour policy, issued a restorative conversation at break time, and informed the form tutor. Result: Both students returned to the lesson within ten minutes, the class completed the activity, and there were no further incidents between the two students for the remainder of the term.
