STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage challenging behaviour in a Geography classroom

During a Year 9 lesson on coastal erosion, three students became disruptive and started throwing paper planes. I immediately implemented the school's behaviour policy by giving clear warnings, then moved the disruptive students to separate seats while continuing the lesson. I used positive reinforcement to praise students who were engaged, which encouraged the others to refocus. After the lesson, I spoke individually with each disruptive student to understand their concerns and arranged for them to present their own coastal case study the following week. This approach resulted in improved behaviour and all three students actively participating in subsequent lessons.
2Question

Describe a situation where you collaborated effectively with other departments

When teaching about climate change impacts, I collaborated with the Science and English departments to create a cross-curricular project. I worked with the Science teacher to ensure accurate understanding of greenhouse gas processes, while the English teacher helped students develop persuasive writing skills for their climate action presentations. We coordinated assessment criteria and shared resources, with 28 Year 8 students participating. The project resulted in a 15% improvement in Geography assessment scores and stronger interdisciplinary understanding, with students commenting positively on seeing real-world connections between subjects.
