More senior candidates will have scope to assist with mentoring junior colleagues and supporting the continued development of the Department.

Ideal Pre-Requisites:

  • Qualified Private Client Solicitor (any PQE level considered)

  • A client-focused, personable approach
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small, friendly team

  • High level of autonomy with appropriate support
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, dependent on experience (confident of paying the right money for the right practitioner)
  • Realistic workloads and genuine emphasis on work-life balance
  • Long-term progression opportunities within a stable regional firm
This is an excellent opportunity for a Private Client Solicitor seeking quality work, a supportive environment, and the chance to build a long-term career within a respected Taunton-based firm.

Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your Personal Statement with your Private Client specialism — the advert explicitly seeks a qualified Private Client Solicitor, so name your PQE level and core areas (Wills, Probate, Trusts) in the first two lines.

2

📊 Quantify your caseload: e.g. "Managed a caseload of 80+ active Private Client matters including 30 probate estates valued at over £2M in aggregate" to demonstrate capacity and scope.

3

🎯 Highlight any experience advising high-net-worth individuals or business owners, as the advert specifically names these client types — include estate values or trust fund sizes where possible.

4

🤝 If you are a more senior candidate (3+ PQE), include a bullet on supervising or mentoring junior fee earners, as the advert explicitly mentions this as a scope for senior hires.

5

🌐 Emphasise your connection to or knowledge of the Somerset/South West regional market — the firm values long-term local client relationships, so any regional ties or existing referral networks are a strong differentiator.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a long-term relationship with a client who initially came in for a single piece of work.

Situation: A retired farmer approached our firm solely to update a straightforward Will following the sale of part of his land. Task: My role was to complete the Will efficiently, but I also identified several unaddressed estate planning issues, including an unprotected farm tenancy and a potential Inheritance Tax liability of around £320,000. Action: I took time after the Will appointment to explain these issues clearly and without jargon, and proposed a follow-up meeting to discuss a Discretionary Trust and agricultural property relief. Result: The client returned for three further matters over the next two years, referring two family members to the firm, and we ultimately reduced his taxable estate by £280,000 through structured planning.
2Question

Give an example of when you identified a tax planning opportunity for a client that they had not previously considered.

Situation: During a routine probate instruction for a widow whose husband had died intestate, I reviewed the estate assets and noticed the couple held significant ISA savings and a buy-to-let property worth £450,000. Task: I needed to administer the estate efficiently while also advising the widow on her own position going forward. Action: I flagged that her own estate was already approaching the nil-rate band threshold and recommended a Nil-Rate Band Discretionary Trust alongside a review of her existing Will. I also introduced her to the firm's tax adviser regarding the rental income. Result: The widow proceeded with a new Will and trust structure, and the firm retained her as an ongoing client, generating an additional £3,400 in fees within six months.
