5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your Personal Statement with your PQE level and Private Client specialism explicitly — the advert requires "2+ PQE in Private Client" so make this the first line recruiters read.

3

🎯 List every Private Client sub-discipline you cover (wills, probate, estate administration, trusts, Court of Protection, tax) as a dedicated skills section — the advert explicitly requires the "whole remit".

4

⭐ If you hold or are working towards STEP membership, place it prominently near your name/qualifications header — the advert flags it as ideal.

5

🤝 Highlight any hybrid or flexible working experience to align with the firm's stated hybrid options, demonstrating you can manage client files and deadlines remotely.

Letter preview — tailored to Reed

Dear Hiring Manager,

Private Client law — specifically the full remit of wills, estate administration, trusts, and Court of Protection work — is where I have built my career, which is why this role at your West Suffolk firm immediately stood out. With over three years of post-qualification experience in a busy Private Client department, I have developed a thorough grounding in inheritance tax planning and complex probate matters that aligns directly with what you are seeking.

My background in Private Client practice has equipped me to manage a varied caseload independently, from drafting bespoke discretionary trusts to guiding families through contentious estate administrations. I am currently working towards my STEP qualification, reinforcing my technical knowledge in trust and estate planning. I am confident I can contribute to your department from day one.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deliver difficult news to a bereaved client during estate administration — how did you handle it?

Situation: A recently widowed client came to me expecting a straightforward probate, but I discovered the estate had an outstanding HMRC income tax liability of £18,000 that would significantly reduce her inheritance. Task: I needed to inform her sensitively while also outlining a clear resolution plan. Action: I arranged a face-to-face meeting rather than communicating by letter, prepared a written summary of the liability and the steps to resolve it, and liaised directly with HMRC to negotiate a payment timeline from estate funds. I also identified an overlooked ISA allowance transfer that partially offset the shortfall. Result: The estate was administered within 22 weeks, the client expressed her gratitude in writing, and she subsequently instructed the firm to draft her own will and Lasting Powers of Attorney.
2Question

Describe a situation where you managed competing deadlines across multiple complex Private Client matters. How did you prioritise?

Situation: During a particularly busy quarter I was simultaneously handling 8 active probate files, 3 of which had imminent HMRC IHT400 deadlines within the same two-week window. Task: I needed to ensure all submissions were accurate and on time without compromising the quality of advice to other clients. Action: I created a priority matrix ranking files by statutory deadline and complexity, delegated routine correspondence on lower-priority matters to a trainee I was supervising, and blocked two full days for IHT calculations. I also communicated proactively with clients whose matters would experience a brief delay. Result: All three IHT400 forms were submitted on time with no penalties, the trainee completed 14 routine letters accurately, and client satisfaction scores for that quarter remained at 97%.
