Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with your PQE level and the full breadth of Private Client work you cover — the advert explicitly requires the 'whole remit' including tax, trusts, wills, probate and Court of Protection.

2

📊 Quantify your caseload: e.g. 'Managed a portfolio of 80+ active probate and estate administration matters simultaneously, completing 95% within agreed timescales.'

3

🎯 Highlight any STEP qualification or progress towards it prominently — the advert flags it as ideal, so even part-completion (e.g. STEP Foundation) will differentiate you from other applicants.

4

🌐 Mention hybrid or flexible working experience if relevant, as the advert notes hybrid options may be available — demonstrating you can work effectively remotely reassures the firm.

5

🤝 Reference experience working within a regional or high-street firm environment, as the employer is described as a reputable regional firm — this signals cultural fit and familiarity with the client base.

Dear Hiring Manager,

Private Client work spanning wills, trusts, estate administration and Court of Protection is where I have built my legal career — which is why this role at your North Norfolk firm immediately stood out. With over two years of post-qualification experience in Private Client law, I have developed a thorough grounding in inheritance tax planning and probate administration, precisely the skills your department requires.

My background in Private Client practice includes managing a caseload of complex estate administrations and trust matters, advising clients through some of the most sensitive periods of their lives with both technical rigour and genuine empathy. STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly sensitive or complex probate matter — how did you handle the client relationship?

Situation: A client came to me following the sudden death of their spouse, leaving an estate worth approximately £1.2 million with a disputed asset and a potential inheritance tax liability. Task: I needed to administer the estate efficiently while managing the emotional distress of the client and a disagreement between two beneficiaries. Action: I held a structured meeting with all parties, clearly explained the legal process and timescales, and instructed a specialist valuer to resolve the disputed asset within three weeks. I provided fortnightly written updates to keep all parties informed. Result: The estate was fully administered within nine months, the tax liability was reduced by £40,000 through a deed of variation, and the client left a five-star Google review praising the clarity of communication throughout.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage competing deadlines across multiple Private Client matters — how did you prioritise?

Situation: During a particularly busy quarter, I was simultaneously handling 55 active files including three time-critical Court of Protection applications and two estates approaching the HMRC inheritance tax payment deadline. Task: I needed to ensure no deadline was missed while maintaining quality of advice across all matters. Action: I introduced a weekly file review system, colour-coding matters by urgency, and delegated routine correspondence on lower-priority files to a paralegal I supervised. I communicated proactively with clients where timescales were likely to extend. Result: All three Court of Protection applications were filed on time, both IHT payments were made before the six-month deadline avoiding interest charges of approximately £3,200, and client satisfaction scores remained at 97% for the quarter.
