STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to be creative to engage a reluctant learner

I worked with a Year 3 pupil who was struggling with multiplication tables and had become disengaged from maths lessons. I created a superhero-themed game where each correct answer earned 'power points' to defeat mathematical villains. I used colourful visual aids and incorporated movement, allowing him to physically jump between answer stations. Within 3 weeks, his multiplication recall improved from 20% to 75% accuracy, and he began volunteering answers in whole-class sessions. The creative approach transformed his attitude towards maths and boosted his confidence significantly.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work as part of a team to support a pupil's progress

A Year 2 pupil was 18 months behind in reading, requiring coordinated support. I collaborated with the class teacher, SENCO, and parents to create a consistent intervention plan. I delivered daily 15-minute phonics sessions, the teacher provided differentiated classroom tasks, and we gave parents structured home reading activities. We met weekly to review progress and adjust strategies. After one term, the pupil progressed by 8 months in reading age, demonstrating how effective teamwork can accelerate learning outcomes when everyone works towards the same goals.
