1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to be particularly creative to engage a reluctant learner

I was working with a Year 3 pupil who consistently refused to participate in maths activities and would become withdrawn during lessons. I noticed he was passionate about football, so I created a series of maths problems using football scenarios - calculating scores, working out league tables, and measuring pitch dimensions. Within 2 weeks, his engagement improved dramatically and he began volunteering answers. His maths assessment scores increased by 15% over the following month, and he started helping other pupils with similar problems using the football examples we'd developed together.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work with a challenging pupil and how you handled it

I supported a Year 1 pupil who had frequent emotional outbursts during reading sessions, often throwing books and disrupting the group of 5 other children. I worked with the class teacher to identify triggers and discovered the child felt overwhelmed by text-heavy books. I introduced picture-based storytelling activities and gradually built up to simple sentences over 6 weeks. The outbursts reduced from daily occurrences to once weekly, and the child's reading confidence grew significantly. By term end, they were participating fully in group reading activities and had caught up with their expected reading level.
