STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a challenging classroom environment in an unfamiliar school.

Situation: I arrived at a Year 4 class in a Derbyshire school with 10 minutes' notice, with no lesson plan left by the absent teacher. Task: I needed to deliver a full morning session for 28 pupils while maintaining order in a classroom I had never entered before. Action: I drew on a bank of flexible literacy and numeracy activities I carry for exactly this scenario, quickly assessed the class's reading level from the books on their desks, and set a structured group task within the first five minutes to establish expectations. Result: The class completed a full guided reading session and a written activity. The school's SENCO commented that behaviour had been notably calm, and I was re-booked for two further days that same week.
2Question

Describe how you have continued your professional development while working in a supply capacity.

Situation: After moving into supply teaching, I noticed my phonics delivery was less structured than the schools I was covering expected, as several had adopted a specific systematic phonics scheme. Task: I needed to upskill quickly to remain effective across KS1 placements. Action: I completed an online CPD course in systematic synthetic phonics over four weeks, investing roughly 6 hours of my own time, and practised delivery during EYFS and Year 1 cover sessions. Result: Within one term, three schools specifically requested me for phonics-focused cover, and one offered a 6-week short-term contract to support a Year 1 teacher on sick leave — increasing my weekly earnings by approximately £320 that half-term.
