1Question

Tell me about a time you had to quickly adapt to a new classroom environment

I was called to cover a Year 2 class at 7:30am with no lesson plans provided. Upon arrival, I quickly assessed the classroom resources and spoke with the teaching assistant to understand the class routine and current topics. I created engaging maths and literacy activities using the available resources, incorporating the children's current phonics programme. I established clear expectations and used the existing reward system. By break time, the children were settled and engaged. The head teacher commented that the transition was seamless, and I was invited back for a week-long placement the following month.
2Question

How do you build rapport with students when you're only with them temporarily?

When I started a 3-week placement in a Year 4 class, I spent the first morning learning every child's name and one interesting fact about them. I used positive reinforcement consistently, celebrating small achievements and following the class's established routines. I incorporated their interests into lessons where possible and maintained the same high expectations as their regular teacher. By day 3, the children were comfortable asking questions and participating actively. The class teacher noted that behaviour and engagement levels remained consistent throughout my placement, with 28 out of 30 pupils achieving their weekly targets.
