STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully re-engaged a disengaged pupil

I worked with an 8-year-old pupil who had been out of school for 4 months due to anxiety issues. Initially, he refused to engage with any written work and would shut down after 10 minutes. I started sessions with hands-on activities he enjoyed, like building maths concepts with Lego blocks. Over 8 weeks, I gradually introduced writing tasks disguised as games, such as creating comic strips for literacy. By the end of our programme, he was completing 45-minute focused sessions and successfully transitioned back to his local primary school with 92% attendance in his first term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to be creative to help a struggling student

I tutored a 10-year-old with dyslexia who struggled with traditional reading methods and had lost confidence completely. Standard phonics approaches weren't working, so I created a multi-sensory reading programme using coloured overlays, tactile letter cards, and rhythm-based learning. I incorporated his love of football by using match reports and player statistics for reading practice. Within 12 weeks, his reading age improved by 18 months, and he went from reading reluctantly for 5 minutes to voluntarily reading football magazines for 30 minutes at home.
