SEND Specialist Tutor Job - Crediton

Prospero Teaching is looking for SEND Specialist Tutors to deliver bespoke tuition packages on a 1:1 basis to young people with SEND that cannot currently access mainstream education.

The Opportunity

We are looking for inspirational tutors around Crediton to support children and young people with SEND. Many children with SEND have been disengaged with their learning. We support pupils that have struggled to stay in the classroom, who feel too anxious to go to school or whose needs aren't sufficiently supported at school.

As a SEND Specialist Tutor, you must be able to create, plan and deliver 1:1 tailored lesson to bridge gaps in pupil's education and boost attainment levels. You may be an experienced tutor or teacher or have experience of working with children in a therapeutic way. One of your aims will be to support and re-engage a pupil in their learning, offer structure back into their daily routine, continue their educational development and return to school.

The tuition is replacing school for these young people and is normally part-time, taking place during school hours, five days a week. Prospero will work with you closely to monitor the progression with each pupil by asking you to submit weekly reports.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a disengaged pupil re-engage with learning

I worked with a 12-year-old pupil with severe anxiety who hadn't attended school for 8 weeks. The situation required rebuilding his confidence in learning. I started with 30-minute sessions focused on his interests in dinosaurs, gradually introducing maths through fossil timelines and geography through excavation sites. After 4 weeks, he was completing 2-hour sessions and had progressed from refusing to write to producing detailed project work. The result was his successful return to school with 95% attendance over the following term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour during a lesson

I was tutoring a 14-year-old with ADHD who became frustrated during a maths lesson and threw his workbook across the room. Rather than confronting the behaviour directly, I calmly acknowledged his frustration and suggested we take a 5-minute movement break. I then adapted the lesson to use physical manipulatives instead of written work. This approach reduced similar outbursts from 3 per session to zero, and his maths confidence improved significantly over 6 weeks of consistent, adapted teaching methods.
