SEND Specialist Tutor Job - Bideford

Prospero Teaching is looking for SEND Specialist Tutors to deliver bespoke tuition packages on a 1:1 basis to young people with SEND that cannot currently access mainstream education.

The Opportunity

We are looking for inspirational tutors around Bideford to support children and young people with SEND. Many children with SEND have been disengaged with their learning. We support pupils that have struggled to stay in the classroom, who feel too anxious to go to school or whose needs aren't sufficiently supported at school.

As a SEND Specialist Tutor, you must be able to create, plan and deliver 1:1 tailored lesson to bridge gaps in pupil's education and boost attainment levels. You may be an experienced tutor or teacher or have experience of working with children in a therapeutic way. One of your aims will be to support and re-engage a pupil in their learning, offer structure back into their daily routine, continue their educational development and return to school.

The tuition is replacing school for these young people and is normally part-time, taking place during school hours, five days a week. Prospero will work with you closely to monitor the progression with each pupil by asking you to submit weekly reports.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully re-engaged a disengaged pupil

I worked with a 14-year-old with severe school anxiety who hadn't attended classes for 8 months. Initially, he would only engage for 10 minutes before becoming overwhelmed. I started sessions in his garden rather than indoors, using his interest in football to teach maths through match statistics. I gradually increased session length by 5 minutes weekly and introduced academic subjects through sports contexts. After 12 weeks, he was completing 90-minute sessions and expressed interest in returning to school. We successfully transitioned him back to mainstream education with reduced timetable support.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour in a 1:1 setting

During a session with a pupil with ADHD, he became frustrated with a maths problem and threw his workbook across the room, shouting that he was 'stupid'. I remained calm and acknowledged his frustration without addressing the behaviour directly. I suggested we take a 5-minute movement break using his fidget tools, then returned to the problem using manipulatives instead of written work. I broke the problem into 3 smaller steps and celebrated each completion. This approach reduced similar outbursts from daily occurrences to once weekly over 6 weeks.
