1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a disengaged pupil regain confidence in learning

I worked with a Year 9 student who had been out of school for 8 months due to severe anxiety. Initially, he would only engage for 10 minutes before shutting down. I started each session with his interests - gaming and football - to build rapport. I created Maths problems using football statistics and English comprehension using gaming reviews. Over 12 weeks, his session engagement increased from 10 to 45 minutes. By week 16, he was completing full KS3 assessments and achieved a successful transition back to a specialist school with 95% attendance in his first term.
2Question

Describe how you would handle a pupil who refuses to engage during a home tutoring session

During a session with a Year 8 pupil who had been excluded, she refused to speak and turned away from all materials. Rather than persist with the planned lesson, I acknowledged her feelings and asked if she wanted to just sit quietly. After 15 minutes, I started drawing mind maps about her favourite TV show, gradually incorporating literacy skills. She began pointing out characters and plot points. I built on this engagement, creating writing tasks around the show's themes. Within 3 sessions, she was actively participating and completed her first piece of creative writing in 6 months.
