1Question

Tell me about a time you had to build relationships with political stakeholders from scratch

When I joined a healthcare charity, I needed to establish relationships with MPs interested in rare disease policy. I researched 30 parliamentarians' voting records and committee memberships, then arranged 15 one-to-one briefing meetings over 8 weeks. I prepared tailored briefing packs highlighting constituency-specific health data and policy impacts. This approach resulted in 12 MPs joining our All-Party Parliamentary Group and 5 submitting Parliamentary Questions on our key issues within 3 months. The relationships I built led to 3 parliamentary debates and ultimately influenced government policy on rare disease research funding allocation.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to align competing priorities between campaigning and organisational objectives

Our charity wanted to launch an ambitious awareness campaign during a general election period, but our fundraising team needed political stability for a major donor cultivation event. I proposed a phased approach: delaying the campaign launch by 6 weeks to avoid election sensitivity, while using the interim period to build cross-party support through private briefings. This strategy secured endorsements from 8 MPs across 4 parties before the public launch, increased media coverage by 40%, and protected our donor relationships. The campaign ultimately raised £180,000 and achieved our policy objectives without compromising organisational priorities.
