STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage challenging behaviour in a nursery setting

Situation: I had a 4-year-old who was having daily meltdowns during transition times, disrupting the class of 24 children. Task: I needed to support this child whilst maintaining a positive learning environment for all pupils. Action: I observed his triggers and introduced a visual transition schedule with 5-minute warnings. I also created a calm corner with sensory tools and worked with his parents to establish consistent routines. Result: Within 3 weeks, his meltdowns reduced from daily to once weekly, and other children began using the visual schedule independently, improving overall classroom transitions by 40%.
2Question

Describe how you've worked collaboratively with parents to support a child's development

Situation: A 3-year-old in my class was struggling with speech development, speaking only single words while peers used full sentences. Task: I needed to coordinate support between home and school to accelerate her language development. Action: I arranged weekly meetings with her parents, sharing specific language activities and providing home learning packs. We implemented consistent vocabulary targets and I liaised with the speech therapist for professional strategies. Result: Over 6 months, her vocabulary increased from 20 to 150 words, and she progressed to using 3-word phrases, meeting her EYFS communication targets ahead of schedule.
