STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed challenging behaviour in a nursery setting

Situation: I had a 4-year-old pupil who was consistently disrupting circle time by shouting and running around, affecting the learning of 24 other children. Task: I needed to address this behaviour while maintaining a positive learning environment for all pupils. Action: I implemented a visual behaviour chart system and worked closely with the child's parents to ensure consistency. I also provided the child with a special helper role during circle time to channel their energy positively. Result: Within 3 weeks, disruptive incidents reduced by 80% and the child became one of our most engaged participants, even helping other children follow the circle time rules.
2Question

Describe how you've built positive relationships with parents and carers

Situation: I was assigned a nursery class where several parents had expressed concerns about their children's progress and felt disconnected from their learning journey. Task: I needed to rebuild trust and create stronger home-school partnerships with 28 families. Action: I introduced weekly photo journals showing each child's activities, set up informal coffee mornings before school, and created personalised learning targets that parents could support at home. I also made myself available for 10 minutes after school daily for quick check-ins. Result: Parent satisfaction scores improved from 65% to 94% over one term, and attendance at parents evenings increased from 60% to 96%, with parents reporting feeling much more involved in their children's education.
