STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you led a team through a challenging situation

When our nursery faced an Ofsted inspection with only 2 weeks' notice, I led my team of 4 practitioners through intensive preparation. I organised daily briefings to review EYFS requirements, delegated observation portfolio updates, and conducted mock inspection scenarios. I maintained team morale by celebrating small wins and providing clear guidance on expectations. During the inspection, our pre-school room received 'Good' ratings across all areas, with inspectors particularly praising our teamwork and child-centred approach. This experience strengthened our team cohesion and improved our ongoing practice standards.
2Question

Give an example of when you've had to reflect on and change your practice

I noticed that 3 children in my pre-school group were struggling with early writing skills despite traditional approaches. After reflecting on their individual needs, I researched sensory writing techniques and introduced sand trays, finger painting, and large-scale mark-making outdoors. I tracked their progress over 6 weeks and saw significant improvement in their fine motor skills and writing confidence. This experience taught me the importance of adapting teaching methods to suit different learning styles, and I now regularly incorporate multi-sensory approaches into my planning.
