STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you showed patience in a challenging situation

When working as a volunteer at a community centre, I supported a 4-year-old who was struggling to settle during story time, becoming increasingly upset and disruptive. I calmly sat beside him, offered gentle reassurance, and suggested he could help me turn the pages of the book. I maintained a patient, positive approach for 15 minutes until he felt comfortable enough to rejoin the group. This experience taught me that patience and individual attention can transform challenging moments into positive learning opportunities, which I believe is essential when supporting children's emotional development in a nursery setting.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work as part of a team to achieve a goal

During a charity fundraising event, our 6-person team needed to organise activities for 40 families within 3 hours. I took responsibility for coordinating the children's craft station while liaising closely with colleagues managing face painting and games. We established clear communication channels, shared resources when needed, and supported each other during busy periods. Through effective teamwork and regular check-ins, we successfully engaged all families and raised £1,200 for the charity. This experience demonstrated how collaboration and mutual support create positive outcomes, skills I would bring to working alongside qualified practitioners in your nursery team.
