STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to adapt your approach to meet an individual child's needs

I worked with a 3-year-old who was struggling with separation anxiety during drop-offs. The situation required immediate attention as it was affecting his participation in activities and distressing other children. I developed a personalised transition routine involving a comfort object and gradual exposure to group activities, starting with 10-minute sessions. I also created a visual schedule showing his daily activities to provide predictability. After 3 weeks of this tailored approach, his anxiety reduced significantly and he began participating fully in group activities, improving his social development and overall nursery experience.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to communicate effectively with concerned parents

A parent was worried about their 4-year-old's apparent lack of progress in pre-writing skills compared to peers. I needed to address their concerns whilst maintaining a supportive relationship. I arranged a meeting to discuss their child's development, prepared examples of their work showing gradual improvement, and explained age-appropriate milestones. I suggested specific activities they could do at home and scheduled weekly check-ins. The parent felt reassured by the structured approach, and within 6 weeks, both they and I could see marked improvement in their child's fine motor skills and confidence with writing activities.
