Dear Hiring Manager,

Travail Employment Group's Mobile Vehicle Engineer vacancy immediately caught my attention — the combination of mechanical and electrical vehicle adaptation work, including MIG welding and wiring diagram interpretation, aligns precisely with the hands-on, multi-skilled engineering career I have been building. The opportunity to serve disabled drivers across the South East, working independently from a company vehicle, is exactly the kind of purposeful, field-based role I am seeking.

My background in auto electrics and vehicle modification has equipped me to carry out complex adaptation installations confidently, both in workshop settings and at customer premises. I have experience interpreting wiring diagrams, completing fabrication tasks, and delivering post-installation handovers to customers — skills that map directly to the requirements outlined in your advert. I hold a full UK driving licence and am fully comfortable representing an employer professionally while working unsupervised off-site.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to use your initiative to solve a technical problem while working unsupervised off-site.

Situation: I was at a customer's home fitting a hand-control adaptation when I discovered the vehicle's existing wiring loom had been non-standardly modified by a previous garage, making the diagram I had inaccurate. Task: I needed to complete the installation safely that day, as the customer had no alternative transport. Action: I methodically traced each circuit with a multimeter, re-mapped the relevant section of the loom, and adapted the installation route accordingly, documenting my findings for the workshop records. Result: The adaptation was completed within the original two-hour window, the customer passed their DVLA assessment the following week, and my revised wiring notes were adopted as a reference for two subsequent similar vehicles.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to explain a technical product or installation to a customer with no engineering background.

Situation: After fitting a powered swivel seat and hand controls for a newly disabled driver, I could see the customer was anxious about operating the adaptations independently. Task: My job was to ensure they felt confident before I left the premises. Action: I broke the handover into three short stages — entry, driving controls, and exit — using plain language and avoiding jargon. I demonstrated each stage twice, then asked the customer to complete each step themselves while I observed and gave reassurance. Result: The customer's confidence visibly improved, they completed all three stages unassisted, and the company received a written commendation from their occupational therapist praising the quality of the handover.
