STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to coordinate multiple contractors for equipment maintenance

During a major laboratory upgrade, I coordinated 8 specialist contractors for simultaneous CMM, CT/X-Ray, and environmental system maintenance over 3 weeks. I created detailed RAMS documentation for each contractor, scheduled access to minimise cross-interference, and held daily progress meetings. When the CT/X-Ray contractor discovered unexpected calibration drift, I quickly arranged for an additional metrology specialist and adjusted the timeline. The project completed 2 days ahead of schedule with all equipment achieving specification, and the laboratory resumed full operations with 15% improved measurement accuracy.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified and resolved a critical equipment fault

Our primary CMM began showing measurement inconsistencies during critical automotive component validation. I systematically checked environmental conditions first, discovering the humidity control system had failed overnight, causing 12% variation from specification. I immediately isolated the affected measurement area, activated backup environmental controls, and contacted the HVAC contractor. While coordinating the repair, I recalibrated the CMM using certified reference standards and validated 18 previous measurements. The fault was resolved within 6 hours, preventing £24,000 in potential rework costs and maintaining our customer delivery schedule.
