Looking to take your data-centre or mission-critical engineering expertise international?

This is a rare opportunity to relocate to Frankfurt, Europe’s leading data-centre hub, and play a key role in delivering some of the region’s most technically complex, high-profile mission-critical projects.

This position is ideally suited to an experienced mechanical building services professional currently working in the UK or EU, with a strong background in data centres or mission-critical infrastructure, who is ready to step into a broader leadership role within a global consultancy.

What’s in It for You

Relocation to Europe’s Data-Centre Capital – Frankfurt is one of the most active data-centre markets in the world. By relocating, you will place yourself at the centre of large-scale, hyperscale and colocation developments with long-term project pipelines.

Technical Leadership Without the Job-Title Politics – This role is about influence, technical authority, and decision-making. You’ll lead complex mechanical design and delivery without being boxed into a specific senior title.

Mission-Critical Focus – Your work will centre on high-availability environments, including advanced cooling solutions, resilient HVAC systems, ventilation strategies, and mechanical infrastructure designed for continuous operation.

Client Trust & Technical Authority – You will act as a senior technical point of contact for clients, providing confidence, clarity, and direction through all stages of design and delivery.

International & Collaborative Environment – You’ll work alongside multidisciplinary teams across Black & White Engineering’s global offices, blending UK best practice with German engineering standards.

Develop Others, Grow Yourself – You will support and mentor engineers within the team while continuing to grow your own technical and commercial capability in an international market.

Essential Skills

  • Strong background in data-centre or mission-critical mechanical design (cooling, HVAC, resilience, redundancy).
  • Proven experience leading complex mechanical building services projects.
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical TGA systems and performance-driven design.
  • Experience working in the UK or EU consulting engineering market.
  • Willingness to relocate to Frankfurt, Germany (support provided).
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working directly with clients.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

German language skills are advantageous but not essential at the point of relocation — support can be provided as you settle into the role.

In addition, you will be joining a community that actively supports learning and development through regular knowledge-sharing sessions and investment in accredited professional courses. You can set the pace for your professional development, with the support needed to progress in the direction that suits your career ambitions.

1Question

Tell me about a time you led a complex mechanical engineering project from concept to delivery

I led the mechanical design for a £8.5M mission-critical data centre in Manchester requiring 1.8MW cooling capacity. The situation involved tight deadlines with the client needing operational status within 14 months. I coordinated a 12-person multidisciplinary team, implementing N+1 redundant HVAC systems and advanced cooling solutions. My approach included weekly client briefings and proactive risk management of mechanical systems integration. The result was delivery 3 weeks ahead of schedule, achieving 99.97% uptime in the first year and securing £2.1M in follow-up contracts for the consultancy.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to provide technical authority to resolve a client concern

A hyperscale client questioned our ventilation strategy for their 2.5MW facility, concerned about hotspot risks during peak load conditions. The task required demonstrating technical confidence while addressing legitimate operational concerns. I conducted detailed CFD analysis and presented alternative cooling configurations, showing how our proposed system would maintain 22°C maximum with 15% safety margin even at 110% design load. I also arranged a site visit to our recently completed similar project. The action rebuilt client confidence and they approved the original design. The result was project continuation without delays and the client later praised our technical authority in their testimonial.
