STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to solve a mechanical fitting problem

During assembly of a hydraulic press unit, I discovered that two metallic components wouldn't align properly despite following the engineering drawings exactly. I systematically checked each connection point and realised the mounting bracket had been machined 2mm off specification. Rather than forcing the fit, I consulted with the engineering team and we sourced a replacement bracket. This prevented potential quality issues and the unit was completed within the 3-day deadline, maintaining our 99% quality standard.
2Question

How do you handle working to tight quality standards under pressure?

When our team had to complete 8 machinery units in 5 days for an urgent customer order, I created a systematic checklist for each assembly stage. I double-checked torque specifications at every critical joint and performed visual inspections after each major component installation. By maintaining this methodical approach despite the time pressure, I completed my 3 assigned units without any quality defects, contributing to the team's successful delivery of all 8 units on schedule.
