Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your NPLQ qualification prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Certifications' section — the advert states it is mandatory to apply.

2

📊 Quantify your poolside experience: e.g. 'Supervised a 25-metre pool with up to 80 bathers per session, conducting 6 water quality tests per shift'.

3

🎯 Highlight experience with health and safety documentation, as the advert specifically calls out accurate record-keeping and pool test compliance with company guidelines.

4

🤝 Include a brief example of member engagement or customer interaction in a leisure or aquatics setting, as David Lloyd emphasises premium member experience alongside safety.

5

🏊 If you hold any additional aquatics or first aid certifications (e.g. First Aid at Work, Pool Plant Operator), list them — they differentiate you within a pool of NPLQ-qualified candidates.

Letter preview — tailored to David Lloyd Clubs

Dear Hiring Manager,

David Lloyd Clubs' reputation for premium aquatics facilities and its network of over 180 pools is precisely why the Lifeguard position in Rugby appeals to me. I hold a current NPLQ qualification and have hands-on experience conducting pool water tests, maintaining accurate H&S documentation, and delivering poolside supervision to a high standard — all of which your advert identifies as central to this role.

My background in aquatics and leisure has equipped me with the scanning techniques, emergency response procedures, and member communication skills needed to keep a busy pool environment safe and welcoming. I have consistently ensured pool areas remain compliant with health and safety requirements while contributing positively to the member experience during peak sessions of up to 75 bathers.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to enforce a poolside safety rule with a member who was resistant — how did you handle it?

Situation: A regular member at a leisure centre where I worked repeatedly ran on the poolside despite being reminded by other staff. Task: As the supervising lifeguard, I needed to address the behaviour firmly without alienating a paying member. Action: I approached the member calmly during a quieter moment, explained the specific risk of wet tiles causing serious injury, and offered to walk them to the changing area entrance to show the safest route. I also logged the interaction in the incident book. Result: The member thanked me for the explanation and the behaviour stopped. No further incidents were recorded over the following 3 months, and my supervisor commended the approach in my quarterly review.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a potential hazard before it became an incident. What did you do?

Situation: During a routine pool test at a 20-metre leisure pool, I noticed the chlorine reading had dropped to 0.4 ppm — well below the 1.0 ppm minimum safe level. Task: I needed to act quickly to protect approximately 35 bathers currently in the water. Action: I immediately informed the duty manager, initiated the pool closure procedure, and assisted in clearing the pool calmly and efficiently within 4 minutes. I then completed the full chemical dosing log and retested every 15 minutes until levels returned to 1.5 ppm. Result: The pool reopened safely within 45 minutes with no bather complaints or H&S breaches recorded, and the incident was used as a training example for two new colleagues.
