Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your NPLQ qualification prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Key Qualifications' section, as the advert states it is mandatory to apply.

2

📊 Quantify your poolside experience: 'Supervised a 25-metre pool serving 200+ daily members, conducting 4 water quality tests per shift with zero compliance failures over 12 months'.

3

🎯 Highlight any experience with health and safety documentation and pool testing logs, as the advert specifically calls out accurate record-keeping as a core duty.

4

🤝 Include a line about member-facing experience — the advert emphasises ensuring members have a great experience, so customer service in a leisure or aquatic setting is directly relevant.

5

🌐 Mention any additional aquatic or first aid certifications (e.g. First Aid at Work, Pool Plant Operator) as David Lloyd is a premium operator and supplementary qualifications will differentiate your application.

Letter preview — tailored to David Lloyd Clubs

Dear Hiring Manager,

David Lloyd Clubs' reputation as Europe's leading premium health and wellness group makes the Lifeguard position at your Hamilton club a compelling next step in my aquatic safety career. I hold the NPLQ qualification and have hands-on experience conducting pool water tests, maintaining compliance documentation, and supervising poolside safety across busy leisure environments — precisely the competencies your advert highlights.

My background in aquatic supervision has equipped me with a disciplined approach to health and safety procedures, including regular chemical testing, accurate record-keeping, and swift emergency response. I understand that at a premium facility like David Lloyd, member experience is as important as safety vigilance, and I take pride in delivering both simultaneously.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to respond quickly to an emergency or near-miss situation at poolside.

Situation: During a busy Saturday afternoon session at a 6-lane leisure pool with around 80 swimmers, I noticed a child had slipped beneath the surface in the shallow end and was not resurfacing. Task: As the duty lifeguard, I needed to act within seconds to prevent a serious incident. Action: I activated my whistle signal to alert my colleague to take over general supervision, entered the water immediately, and brought the child to the poolside. I administered reassurance and a brief check for distress before calling the duty manager and completing a full incident report. Result: The child was unharmed and the family was supported by staff. The incident report was reviewed in our next team briefing, and we adjusted lane supervision positioning to reduce blind spots — a change that remained in place for the following season.
2Question

Describe how you have balanced maintaining strict safety vigilance while still delivering a positive experience for members.

Situation: At a health club pool I worked at, a group of adult lane swimmers regularly ignored the directional lane signs, causing near-collisions during peak hours. Task: I needed to enforce the rules without alienating regular paying members. Action: Rather than issuing blunt instructions, I approached the group during a quieter moment, explained the safety rationale behind lane direction, and offered to help them find a lane that suited their pace. I also added clearer poolside signage and flagged the pattern to the pool supervisor. Result: Complaints about lane conflicts dropped noticeably over the following 4 weeks, and two of the swimmers personally thanked me for the explanation. The supervisor cited the signage update in the next quarterly safety review.
