Letter preview — tailored to David Lloyd Clubs

Dear Hiring Manager,

David Lloyd Clubs' reputation as Europe's leading premium health and wellness group makes the Lifeguard position in Swindon a compelling next step in my aquatics career. I hold a current NPLQ qualification and have hands-on experience conducting pool water quality tests, maintaining accurate H&S documentation, and delivering safe, compliant poolside supervision across busy public sessions.

My background in aquatics supervision has equipped me with the ability to perform thorough pool scans, respond swiftly to emergencies, and communicate safety requirements clearly to both colleagues and members. I have consistently maintained accurate shift records and ensured pool areas meet all regulatory standards, working across pools accommodating up to 80 bathers per session.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a safety hazard at a pool and how you dealt with it.

Situation: During a busy Saturday morning session at a leisure centre with around 70 bathers in the pool, I noticed the pool pH reading was 8.4 — above the safe upper limit of 7.8. Task: I needed to act quickly to protect bathers while minimising disruption. Action: I immediately informed the duty manager, closed the pool to new entrants, and added the appropriate corrective chemical dose as per our H&S protocol. I retested the water every 15 minutes and maintained a log of all readings. Result: The pH returned to 7.6 within 45 minutes, the pool reopened safely, and my documentation was later cited as a model example during our quarterly H&S audit.
2Question

Give an example of when you had to remain calm and focused under pressure in a poolside environment.

Situation: During a school group session of 40 children, a 9-year-old got into difficulty in the deep end and went under. Task: I had to respond within seconds while managing the panic of nearby swimmers. Action: I activated the emergency alarm, entered the water immediately, and brought the child to the pool edge using a supported tow. My colleague cleared the pool of other bathers within 20 seconds. I administered a primary assessment and the child recovered without requiring further medical intervention. Result: The child was unharmed, the incident was documented in full, and our response time of under 30 seconds was commended by the centre manager during the post-incident debrief.
