STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you motivated a disengaged Year 5 pupil

I had a Year 5 student who consistently avoided writing tasks and seemed disinterested in lessons. I discovered through conversation that he was passionate about football but struggled with confidence in literacy. I created a project where he could write match reports and player profiles, incorporating curriculum objectives around persuasive writing and research skills. Over 6 weeks, his engagement increased dramatically - he began volunteering answers and produced his longest piece of writing that term. His confidence grew, and he started participating more actively in other subjects too, achieving a 2-level improvement in his writing assessment.
2Question

Describe how you've worked collaboratively with colleagues to improve student outcomes

Our Year 5 team noticed that pupils were struggling with mathematical reasoning across all classes. I worked with 3 other Year 5 teachers to develop a shared approach using concrete manipulatives and visual methods. We planned weekly collaborative sessions where we observed each other's lessons and shared effective strategies. I contributed a problem-solving framework that we implemented across all classes. After one term, our collective Year 5 cohort showed 18% improvement in reasoning test scores, and we presented our approach to the whole school during a staff development day.
