1Question

Tell me about a time you had to quickly adapt to a new school environment

During my first supply placement at a Year 3 class, I arrived to find the regular teacher had left detailed plans but the class was unsettled due to recent changes. I spent the first 15 minutes observing the children's behaviour patterns and quickly identified that 3 pupils needed additional support. I adapted the morning literacy lesson to include more visual aids and hands-on activities, which immediately engaged the reluctant learners. By lunchtime, I had established clear classroom routines and the afternoon ran smoothly. The head teacher commented that the children seemed more settled than they had been all week, and I was invited back for the remainder of the term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you helped build a child's confidence in learning

I was covering a Year 1 class where one pupil, Emma, consistently refused to participate in maths activities and would become upset when numbers were mentioned. I noticed she loved drawing, so I created a visual approach using her artwork to introduce basic counting concepts. Over 3 weeks, I gradually incorporated numbers into her drawings - counting flowers, adding characters to scenes. Her confidence grew as she realised she could do maths through something she enjoyed. By the end of my placement, Emma was volunteering answers during whole-class maths sessions. Her class teacher was amazed at the transformation and adopted similar visual techniques for other reluctant learners.
