1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new teaching environment

When I started PPA cover at Meadowbank Primary, I was asked to teach a Year 4 class with challenging behaviour dynamics on my first day. The situation required immediate adaptation as the regular teacher was unexpectedly absent. I quickly reviewed the lesson plans, observed the classroom layout and behaviour chart system, then introduced myself with clear expectations. I implemented the existing reward system while adding my own positive reinforcement techniques. By the end of the lesson, I had 28 pupils engaged in a maths investigation, with 3 previously disruptive students actively participating. The class teacher later commented that the pupils had completed more work than usual, demonstrating successful quick adaptation.
2Question

Describe how you build rapport with students you've never taught before

During my first week covering Year 2 at Oakfield Primary, I needed to quickly connect with 30 six-year-olds who had never met me. I started each lesson by learning every child's name using a fun memory game, then spent 5 minutes asking about their interests and weekend activities. I incorporated their responses into lesson examples - using Emma's cat in a story problem and Jake's football team in a PE warm-up. Within 2 days, pupils were approaching me confidently for help and sharing their work proudly. The class teacher noted that behaviour incidents dropped by 80% during my cover week, showing the positive relationships I had established through personalised attention and genuine interest in each child.
