1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a reluctant learner engage with their work

I worked with a Year 1 pupil who consistently refused to participate in writing activities. I observed that he was passionate about dinosaurs, so I created personalised writing tasks incorporating dinosaur facts and stories. I started with simple sentence completion exercises about his favourite dinosaurs, gradually building to independent writing. Within 3 weeks, he was voluntarily choosing writing activities during free time and his confidence improved dramatically. His class teacher noted a 60% increase in his writing output, and he began helping other children who struggled with similar tasks.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour in the classroom

During a Year 2 maths lesson, one pupil became increasingly frustrated and started disrupting others by throwing pencils and shouting. I calmly approached and used our agreed signal system to redirect his attention. I quietly moved him to our designated calm corner with a sensory fidget toy and gave him 2 minutes to regulate. Once calm, I helped him break the maths problem into smaller steps using visual aids. He successfully completed the task and apologised to his classmates. This approach reduced his outbursts from daily occurrences to just twice weekly over the following month.
