1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your approach for a struggling pupil

A Year 2 pupil with dyslexia was falling behind in reading despite standard phonics support. I recognised the current approach wasn't working and researched multi-sensory techniques. I implemented a programme using tactile letters, visual cues and movement-based learning over 6 weeks. I tracked progress through weekly assessments and adjusted activities based on what engaged him most. The result was remarkable - his reading age improved by 8 months in just one term, and his confidence soared. This taught me the importance of flexible, evidence-based approaches tailored to individual learning styles.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to communicate difficult information to parents

I needed to discuss concerns about a Year 1 pupil's potential learning difficulties with her parents during a scheduled meeting. The child was significantly behind peers in literacy and showing signs of processing issues. I prepared carefully, gathering specific examples and assessment data over 4 weeks. I presented the information sensitively, focusing on the child's strengths first, then outlined specific areas of concern with concrete examples. I suggested next steps including specialist assessment and additional support strategies. The parents initially felt overwhelmed but appreciated the thorough approach. We developed a joint action plan, and the child received the support she needed, making substantial progress over the following term.
