STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target. What was your approach?

In my previous role, I was tasked with achieving £200k annual sales but the team was 15% behind target by Q3. I analysed our customer data and identified that we were losing potential upsells during initial consultations. I developed a structured needs-assessment approach, spending extra time understanding each client's full requirements rather than rushing to close. I also implemented weekly follow-ups with warm prospects. This strategy helped me personally achieve £235k by year-end, exceeding my target by 118% and contributing to the team's overall recovery.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build a relationship with a difficult customer

I had a trade customer who was consistently late on payments and complained about every quote. Rather than avoiding them, I scheduled a face-to-face meeting to understand their challenges. I discovered they were struggling with cash flow due to delayed payments from their own clients. I worked with our finance team to arrange a more flexible payment schedule and provided them with detailed project timelines to help them manage client expectations better. Over 8 months, they became one of our most reliable customers, placing orders worth £45k annually.
