Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your Cat C / HGV Class 2 licence prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Licences & Certifications' section — the advert lists it as a hard requirement.

2

📊 Quantify your driving experience: e.g. 'Completed 25+ customer deliveries per shift across a 40-mile local radius with zero missed delivery targets over 18 months'.

3

🎯 Highlight any wholesale, food & drink, or trade delivery experience specifically, as Booker serves independent retailers and caterers — sector-relevant experience will stand out.

4

🤝 Include a brief line on your customer-facing skills, referencing regular route relationships, as the advert specifically mentions 'building relationships with regular customers'.

5

📋 Mention accuracy in paperwork and delivery documentation in your work history bullets — the advert explicitly requires this and many drivers overlook it on their CV.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's HGV Class 2 Driver position in Halesowen is a strong match for my experience and the kind of local, customer-focused driving work I actively seek. I hold a full Cat C licence with over three years of delivery driving behind me, and I am well-versed in accurate paperwork completion and safe manual handling on trade deliveries.

My background in delivery logistics has seen me complete up to 20 customer drops per shift, maintaining consistent on-time performance and building reliable relationships with regular customers — precisely the approach Booker values in keeping independent retailers and caterers stocked. I am comfortable with vehicle loading procedures, pre-shift checks, and resolving delivery discrepancies on the spot.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult customer during a delivery — how did you handle it?

Situation: A regular trade customer at a busy café refused a delivery, claiming three cases of stock were incorrect, despite the manifest showing otherwise. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute on the spot without delaying the remaining 14 drops on my route. Action: I calmly walked through the delivery note with the customer item by item, identified that one case had been mispicked at the depot, acknowledged the error, and called the branch immediately to arrange a same-day correction. I completed the rest of the delivery and documented the discrepancy accurately. Result: The customer received the correct stock within two hours, and my supervisor noted the swift resolution in my next review. The customer remained on my regular route without further issues.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to complete a high volume of deliveries under time pressure. What did you do?

Situation: A colleague called in sick on a Friday morning, leaving our depot short-staffed with 32 deliveries scheduled across two routes. Task: My manager asked if I could absorb an additional 10 drops on top of my usual 22, all before close of business at 17:00. Action: I re-sequenced both route lists to eliminate backtracking, prioritised the four time-critical catering customers first, and skipped my usual 30-minute break, taking a shorter 15-minute stop instead. I communicated estimated arrival times to three customers who had flagged tight windows. Result: I completed all 32 deliveries by 16:45 with no missed drops and received written recognition from the depot manager the following week.
