STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you motivated a member who was struggling to engage with a fitness class.

Situation: A regular member at my previous club began skipping cycling classes after finding the intensity too demanding, and her attendance dropped from 3 sessions per week to just one. Task: As the lead instructor, I wanted to re-engage her without singling her out in front of the group. Action: I spoke with her privately after a session, assessed her current fitness level, and created a modified progression plan over 4 weeks, adjusting her resistance targets and pairing her with a more supportive class slot on Tuesday mornings. I also checked in briefly at the start of each class. Result: Within 6 weeks she was attending 3 sessions per week again and completed her first full high-intensity class, which she told me was a personal milestone.
2Question

Give an example of when you supported or mentored a junior instructor. What was the outcome?

Situation: A newly qualified Level 2 instructor joined our team and was visibly nervous delivering her first HIIT class to a group of 25 members. Task: As the senior instructor on shift, I was responsible for her onboarding and ensuring class quality was maintained. Action: I observed her first two sessions from the back of the studio, provided structured written feedback afterwards, and ran two 30-minute shadow coaching sessions where she mirrored my cueing techniques. I also paired her with a smaller Tuesday morning class of 10 members to build confidence before returning to peak-time slots. Result: Within 8 weeks she was independently delivering 6 classes per week with an average member rating of 4.7 out of 5.
