STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to approach strangers in a public setting

During a university charity fundraising event, I was tasked with approaching shoppers outside Tesco to promote our mental health awareness campaign. Initially nervous, I developed a friendly opening line explaining our cause and asking for just 2 minutes of their time. Over 4 hours, I successfully engaged 67 people, collecting 23 donations totalling £156 and 31 email sign-ups for our newsletter. The key was being genuine, respectful of people's time, and clearly explaining the purpose. This experience taught me that most people are willing to help when approached professionally and with a clear, worthwhile objective.
2Question

How would you handle a passenger who refuses to participate in the survey?

I would politely thank them for their time and respect their decision immediately. For example, if someone said they were too busy or not interested, I'd respond with 'No problem at all, thank you anyway and have a great journey.' I wouldn't persist or take it personally, as I understand people have various reasons for declining. Instead, I'd move on to the next potential participant while maintaining a positive demeanor. This approach ensures I don't create any negative atmosphere on the bus and demonstrates respect for passengers' choices, which is crucial for maintaining Ipsos's professional reputation and ensuring other passengers remain willing to participate.
