STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to approach strangers in a public setting

During a community fundraising event, I approached 200 visitors over 6 hours to promote our charity raffle. Initially nervous, I developed a friendly opening line about the cause and maintained eye contact to build rapport. I adapted my approach for families versus individuals, using different conversation starters. By the end, I had sold 180 raffle tickets worth £900, exceeding our £600 target by 50%. This experience taught me that genuine enthusiasm and respectful persistence help overcome initial hesitation when approaching strangers.
2Question

How would you handle a passenger who refuses to participate in the survey?

I would immediately respect their decision and thank them politely for their time. I'd say something like 'No problem at all, thank you and enjoy your journey' to maintain a positive interaction. I understand that passengers have various reasons for declining - they might be tired, in a hurry, or simply prefer privacy during their commute. I would then move on to approach other passengers without taking the refusal personally. This approach maintains Ipsos's professional reputation while ensuring other passengers feel comfortable participating in future surveys.
