STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a child who was struggling with social skills development

During my time teaching Reception, I had a 5-year-old pupil who found it difficult to share toys and often became upset during group activities. I implemented a buddy system pairing him with a confident, kind classmate and created visual social stories about sharing and taking turns. I also established a reward chart where he earned stickers for positive social interactions. Over 8 weeks, his sharing improved dramatically and he began initiating play with other children. His parents reported similar improvements at home, and by the end of term he was confidently participating in all group activities.
2Question

Describe how you've worked collaboratively with teaching assistants in your classroom

In my previous role, I worked closely with 2 teaching assistants to support a class of 30 Reception children. We held weekly planning meetings where I outlined learning objectives and they contributed observations about individual children's needs. I created detailed activity plans showing how they could support different ability groups during phonics and maths sessions. One TA specialised in supporting 4 children with speech and language needs, while the other focused on extending higher achievers. This collaborative approach resulted in 95% of children meeting their end-of-year targets and created a cohesive team environment.
