STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your teaching approach for a struggling EYFS pupil

I had a 4-year-old pupil who was struggling with phonics recognition and becoming frustrated during carpet time. I observed that he was a kinaesthetic learner who needed movement to engage. I created a phonics treasure hunt where he could move around the classroom finding letter sounds hidden in different areas. I also introduced sand trays for letter formation practice. Within 3 weeks, his phonics recognition improved from 8 to 18 sounds, and his engagement during literacy activities increased significantly. His parents noticed his newfound enthusiasm for reading at home too.
2Question

How do you handle difficult conversations with parents about their child's development?

I had to discuss concerns about a child's social development with parents who were initially defensive. I prepared by gathering specific observations and examples, focusing on factual evidence rather than judgements. I started the conversation by highlighting the child's strengths, then presented my observations using positive language about areas for development. I offered practical strategies they could use at home and suggested additional support options. The parents appreciated the structured approach and we developed a joint action plan. Over 6 weeks, we saw marked improvement in the child's peer interactions and confidence.
