STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you turned a dissatisfied customer into a loyal one through your problem-solving approach.

Situation: A patient returned three weeks after collection unhappy that her progressive lenses felt uncomfortable for extended screen use. Task: I needed to resolve her concern quickly without simply remaking the lenses at cost to the practice. Action: I re-assessed her working distance and screen habits, identified that her corridor length was too short for her desk setup, and arranged a no-charge lens exchange to a wider-corridor design within 48 hours. I also followed up with a phone call five days later. Result: She left a five-star Google review, referred two colleagues to the practice within two months, and became a regular contact lens patient generating roughly £420 in annual spend.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to balance individual sales targets with delivering the best clinical outcome for a patient.

Situation: During a busy Saturday, I was behind on my monthly add-on target when an elderly patient came in needing a straightforward single-vision distance pair on a tight budget. Task: I had to decide whether to recommend premium coatings primarily to hit my target or to focus on what genuinely suited her needs. Action: I recommended a mid-range anti-reflection coating that addressed her night-driving concern without overselling, and documented my clinical rationale clearly. Result: The patient returned six months later and purchased a second pair of reading glasses worth £185, and I still finished the month at 103% of my individual target by focusing on volume and appropriate recommendations across all patients.
