Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers first is precisely what draws me to the Customer Delivery Driver role at Brooklands Extra. With a clean UK driving licence held for over three years and hands-on experience in customer-facing delivery work, I am confident I can represent Tesco professionally at every doorstep — handling order substitutions clearly and ensuring every time slot is met.

My background in delivery and customer service has equipped me with strong route management skills and the ability to carry out thorough vehicle safety checks before every shift. I have regularly managed 20 or more stops per shift independently, resolving customer queries on the spot and maintaining a calm, friendly manner even when orders required changes or refunds.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service under time pressure.

Situation: During a busy Friday evening shift at a supermarket delivery depot, I had 24 drops to complete in a 5-hour window after a colleague called in sick and I absorbed 6 extra stops. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within customer time slots without compromising service quality. Action: I re-sequenced my route using the onboard system to cut backtracking by 12 minutes, and at each door I was concise but warm — flagging two substitutions clearly and processing one refund on the spot. Result: I completed all 24 drops with only one slot running 4 minutes late, and received a 5-star rating from 18 of the 24 customers that evening.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Halfway through a solo delivery route covering 18 stops in Surrey, a road closure due to a burst water main blocked my planned route to 7 remaining addresses. Task: I had to reroute in real time to avoid missing customer time slots. Action: I pulled over safely, used the navigation app to identify an alternative route adding roughly 8 minutes, then called the depot to flag the delay and updated my estimated arrival for the next 3 stops. Result: I delivered all remaining orders within a 6-minute variance of the original slots, and the depot supervisor commended the proactive communication as a model for the rest of the team.
