Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers first is exactly what draws me to the Customer Delivery Driver role at Askham Bar Extra in York. With a clean, valid UK driving licence held for over two years and hands-on experience in customer-facing roles, I am confident I can represent Tesco professionally at every doorstep, handling order substitutions and time slot pressures with a calm, friendly approach.

My background in delivery and customer service has equipped me with the practical skills this role demands. STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service in a face-to-face or doorstep situation.

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local grocery firm, I arrived at an elderly customer's home to find that two of her five items had been substituted with different brands. Task: I needed to explain the changes clearly and ensure she was happy before I left. Action: I calmly walked her through each substitution, explained why the original items were unavailable, and offered a full refund on the items she did not want. I also helped carry the bags to her kitchen, as she had mobility difficulties. Result: She called the depot the following day to compliment the service, and I was mentioned by name in the team's weekly briefing. The customer re-booked a delivery slot within 48 hours.
2Question

Describe a time you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a 22-stop delivery shift, my route planning app crashed and I lost the optimised sequence for the remaining 14 drops. Task: I had to reorganise the rest of the route myself to avoid missing customer time slots. Action: I pulled over safely, used the paper manifest in the cab, and re-ordered the stops by postcode district, prioritising the three customers whose slots expired within the next 45 minutes. I also called the depot to flag the issue so they could monitor my progress. Result: I completed all 14 remaining deliveries within their allocated windows, with only one customer receiving their order in the final 5 minutes of their slot. No complaints were logged for that shift.
