STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully grew revenue from an existing client account

Situation: I inherited a manufacturing client spending £12k annually on our logistics services, but I noticed they were using multiple suppliers. Task: My goal was to become their preferred partner and increase our share of their business. Action: I scheduled quarterly business reviews to understand their expansion plans and identified they needed warehousing in Birmingham. I presented a comprehensive solution combining their existing transport needs with our new warehouse facility. Result: Within 8 months, their annual spend increased to £38k, making them our third-largest account and securing a 3-year contract extension.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build a relationship with a difficult stakeholder

Situation: A key procurement director at a major client was resistant to our pricing proposals and avoided my calls after a failed contract negotiation. Task: I needed to rebuild trust and secure the renewal worth £45k annually. Action: I researched their cost pressures and prepared a detailed benchmarking report showing our competitive position. I requested a face-to-face meeting to present cost-saving opportunities rather than pushing for immediate renewal. Result: The meeting led to a revised 18-month contract worth £52k, and the director became an advocate, referring us to two other divisions within their organisation.
