STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully expanded a client base

Situation: My previous company needed to grow revenue by 30% in a saturated market. Task: I was tasked with identifying and securing new client segments within 8 months. Action: I conducted comprehensive market research, identified 3 untapped sectors, and developed targeted sales strategies for each. I personally prospected 120 leads, arranged 45 meetings, and tailored presentations to each sector's specific needs. Result: I secured 18 new clients generating £2.1M in annual revenue, exceeding the target by 15% and establishing our presence in 2 new market sectors.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build rapport with a difficult prospect

Situation: A high-value prospect worth £400k annually had rejected our proposals twice and seemed uninterested in further meetings. Task: I needed to rebuild the relationship and understand their real concerns. Action: I researched their recent business challenges, arranged an informal coffee meeting, and focused entirely on listening to their pain points rather than pitching. I discovered they'd had poor experiences with similar providers and needed proof of reliability. Result: I provided 3 client references, arranged site visits, and secured a 2-year contract worth £850k by addressing their specific trust concerns.
