STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult or unhappy customer during a delivery.

Situation: A regular wholesale customer at a convenience store received a delivery where two cases of ambient goods had been damaged in transit. Task: I needed to resolve the issue on the spot without escalating the customer's frustration or delaying my remaining 18 drops. Action: I acknowledged the damage immediately, photographed the stock, completed a discrepancy note on the delivery manifest, and called the depot to arrange a same-day replacement. I also offered to help the customer rearrange their remaining stock on the shop floor. Result: The replacement arrived within two hours, the customer praised the response to my depot manager, and they remained a regular account. The incident led to improved packing checks at loading.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a delay or unexpected problem on your route.

Situation: During a morning delivery run covering 22 drops, I encountered a road closure due to an emergency gas repair that blocked my planned route through the town centre. Task: I had to reroute on the fly while ensuring time-sensitive deliveries to two catering customers reached them before their 09:00 kitchen start. Action: I used my knowledge of the local road network to divert via a ring road, contacted the two priority customers by phone to confirm revised arrival times, and reordered three later drops to absorb the delay. Result: Both catering customers received their stock by 08:50, and I completed all 22 deliveries within 25 minutes of the original schedule with no customer complaints logged.
