STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult delivery situation and how you resolved it.

Situation: During a hub run in December, I arrived at a distribution centre in Ipswich to find the loading bay closed due to an unannounced staff shortage, putting three subsequent drops at risk. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the agreed time windows without breaching my drivers' hours. Action: I contacted my transport manager immediately, used the waiting time to update my tachograph records, and rerouted to complete two local drops first while the bay reopened. Result: All four deliveries were completed within their windows, I remained fully compliant with DVSA regulations, and the client noted the proactive communication in their feedback to the agency.
2Question

Describe a shift where you had to adapt quickly to a change in your delivery schedule.

Situation: Midway through a six-drop Monday shift near Bury St Edmunds, I received a call from the depot adding an urgent palletised delivery 40 miles off my planned route. Task: I had to absorb the extra drop without exceeding my daily driving limit or missing the remaining confirmed delivery windows. Action: I recalculated my route using the cab's sat-nav, prioritised the two time-critical drops first, and took my 45-minute break at the new collection point to stay within hours rules. Result: All six original drops plus the additional delivery were completed on time, and I finished the shift 20 minutes inside my legal driving limit with no customer complaints.
